Welcome to the maps section of Digital Digging. Each monument featured in the maps is accompanied by the relevent data from the HER (Historic Environment Record) or SMR (Sites and Monuments Records). The Somerset HER data was genorously supplied by Chris Webster of the Somerset County Council. Without his open approach to historic data DD would have had a harder time getting off the ground.
The Google Maps interface used for this part of the website now allows a Google Earth mode to be engaged - which is very handy of you don't want to download the main Google Earth client, or just want a quick look at the topography of the landscape around each feature without firing Google Earth up. On the other hand, if you want to explore at your leasure, the .kmz files for each feature (or batch of features) are available for download on each page. We're in the process of writing up a tutorial for Google Earth, so check back regularly to see if it's been finished, or you're more than welcome to join us on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ for regular updates. In fact feel free to join us there anyway - it's the best method for keeping up with our new features and tutorials. |
