Though we have included 24 of the known prehistoric trackways and platforms, there are almost certainly many more waiting discovery. There is in fact almost certainly much more of every kind of archaeology lurking in the peat, but with the cessation of peat digging we're going to have to think of more devious ways to discover it. Some of the sites are pretty obscure and will likely remain that way, but one of them - the Sweet Track - is extremely well known. We're working on a feature about it which will be released soon. Join us on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ for regular updates.
Have a browse through the links below - each will take you to an individual page which will display a close up satellite image of the trackway in question, and also the relevent HER data for that monument. The maps are downloadable as a .kmz file from each page.
At the bottom of each page is a list of recommended books on the subject of trackways and wetland archaeology - these have been hand picked for usefulness to the general reader - the list is not auto-generated. The links will take you to the Amazon page for that book, and if you make a purchase you will be helping to support Digital Digging. Thanks in advance, should you decide to go down that route. |
