Old Down Long Barrow.
Site Name: Round or long barrow, Old Down
Civil Parish: Chilcompton
Comprises:
PRN 22902 Excavation (2007), Old Down, Chilcompton
Grid Ref: ST 6304 5119 (ST 65 SW)

Oval mound oriented approx E-W. It is wider and higher at the E end but at 70ft from the E end it has a constriction suggesting that it is formed of two round barrows ploughed together. If it is a long barrow then it appears to be an unchambered one. 105ft long, the E end is 54ft wide and 6ft high, the W end is 42ft wide and 5ft high (T373). Crawford thinks it is a long barrow. {1}

Two barrows 12 paces diameter and 2ft high and 19 paces diameter and 4ft high (Chilcompton 1a and 1b). {2}

Probably a long barrow orientated E-W, 1m high at the E end and 0.5m at the W. The irregularity of the S side seems to be where it has been dug away. {3}

Survives as a low mound c0.5m high in pasture. {4}
