The Devil's Bed and Bolster long barrow [No:29782] |
| Civil Parish: |
Beckington |
| Grid Ref: |
ST 8149 5333 (ST 85 SW) |
Ruins of a long barrow, perhaps internally chambered. 85ft in length and 65ft wide (Beckington I) and previously 4ft high. {1}
Known locally as the Devil's Bed and Bolster. Nine large stones (three of which are recumbent) being either parts of the chambers or a central corridor. {4}
Orientated E-W with a large number of sarsens. Scattered about in the centre, and some standing upright at each end. {6}
Dobson suggests that the fallen stones may have formed a long narrow chamber, but it is impossible to confirm this. {7}
The almost destroyed mound of the barrow appears to have been used as a dump for field clearance and now changes imperceptibly into the natural E-W ridge There are more stones visible than are shown on Bulleid's plan and some of these suggest that there may have been side chambers, but this can only be determined by excavation. {8}
Attempts to move the stones are said to have been foiled by bad weather. {9}
Also said to be immovable. {10}
Flints collected nearby (PRN 23128). {12}
Scheduling revised with new national number on 23 Dec 1997 (was Somerset 428). {13}
The monument is in generally good although neglected condition with a crop on the W end and scrub to the E. {14}
