| SCHEDULED MONUMENT: |
Long barrow 230m east of Chewton Plot [No:13884] |
| Civil Parish: |
Chewton Mendip |
| Grid Ref: |
ST 61120 52910 (ST 65 SW) |
Barrow 17 paces diameter and 5ft high (Chewton Mendip 40). Shown on OS 1st edition map. {1}
Scheduled as a long barrow in 1962 but Grinsell believes it is a round barrow. Crawford suggests it is a lynchet corner. {2}
HBMC schedule gives NGR as ST613529. This seems to be a mistake. No long barrow in that position can be traced in the literature or on OS or RAF APs. Possibly the scheduling may apply to AM 140 or 141. {3}
May be part of the field system (PRN 23251). {4}
Nothing really to be seen on the ground. {5}
New grid ref given by HBMC FMW. {6}
Scheduling revised with new national number on 11 August 1993 (was Somerset 142) {7}
Monument lies in corner and fenced off from arable field. Excellent cover of stable grass. Grassy tracks runs along S side of fenced area. {8}
