Castle Farm Long Barrow.
Site Name: Long barrow, 370m SSE of Castle Farm, Chewton Mendip
SCHEDULED MONUMENT: Long barrow 370m SSE of Castle Farm [No:13885]
Civil Parish: Chewton Mendip
Grid Ref: ST 54520 52550 (ST 55 SW) ST 54520 52550 (ST 55 SW)

Long barrow length 70ft and width 44ft at 27ft from the W end. W end is higher and wider. Max height 3ft 3.5ft at 30ft from W end (T295). In the ESE is an irregular hollow running along the axis of the tumulus. May be a collapsed gallery or chamber. Much disturbed by trees and animals. {1}

Grinsell suggests it is two round barrows. One at ST54515254 14 paces diameter and 3.5ft (Chewton Mendip 3a), the other at ST54535254. 11 paces diameter and 3ft high (Chewton Mendip 3b). {3}

Long mound 1.4m high at the W and 1m high at the E. It is not possible to tell whether it is two bowl barrows. {4}

Rather irregular mound lying within narrow belt of mature fir trees covered with living and dead wood, reeds, bracken in summer. c1.5m high and 10m diameter. Clearance of dead wood would improve the site considerably. {5}

Known as Bristol barrow or Bristol cross in C18 perambulations. {6}

Was scheduled as Somerset 125. {7}

Scheduling revised with new national number 12.08.93. {8}

Short, low mound lying in area of neglected coniferous woodland, being a strip between pasture fields. Generally grass and bracken covered, but some scrub of thorn and elder. Mature conifers presently stable but one on N edge of mound has recently fallen causing disturbance of ground surface. {9}

The barrow could not be observed during a recent survey of aerial photographs and Lidar. This is because it is masked by coniferous tree cover. {10}
