Site Name: Excavation (1963), Cynwit Cannington hillfort, Cannington
Civil Parish: Cannington
Grid Ref: ST 2475 4038 (ST 24 SW)

A small trench 10ft square was excavated to the rear of one of the outer southern ramparts. This showed that the area had been covered by several episodes of hillwash, all of which contained mixed finds. The second layer appeared to date to the Roman or later period and the floor and posthole of a possible structure were found cut into it. There were no iron age levels beneath this. Pottery dated from the beaker period onwards, with a preponderance of Roman sherds. This may suggest that the rampart to the S was constructed later than the main defences which are presumed to be iron age. {1}
