There are six significant recorded Henge monuments in Somerset, though there may be more which have not been detected. Three of them are barely there at all, and one of them - Gorsey Bigbury - is easy enough to miss if you're not sure what you're looking for. The remaing two - Priddy Circles and Stanton Drew are however very impressive. Stanton Drew - the only one of the six that includes stone settings - contains the second largest stone circle in England (after Avebury). Priddy Circles has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in 2011, but the situation is a long way from disasterous. We'll just have to wait. Have a browse through the links below - each will take you to an individual page which will display a close up satellite image of the Henge monument in question, and also the relevent HER data for that monument. The maps are downloadable as a .kmz file from each page.
At the bottom of each page is a list of recommended books on the subject of Henge monuments - these have been hand picked for usefulness to the general reader - the list is not auto-generated. The links will take you to the Amazon page for that book, and if you make a purchase you will be helping to support Digital Digging. Thanks in advance, should you decide to go down that route. |
